ENTS,
I just got permission to post these pictures, sent by a member of
another group (a group for people who visit and explore medieval
churches in England).
From his original post:
"St Mary, Eastling, Kent part 1
Massive tree next to church porch."
Another member's response:
"Wow! What a yew."
So it must be a Yew. I couldn't tell, though I've heard there are
some gigantic Yews in English parish churchyards. I thought you guys
would want to see this.

Barry,
Nice Yew! You can find more information on this tree and many
more yewtrees
in the UK on a special website:
http://www.ancient-yew.org/ Look in the
gazetteer for "Eastling". The Yew has a girth near the ground of
28'6" and
some 3 feet more at 5 feet. There are many yews in the UK with a
girth over
25 feet and some over 30. They are thought to be very old, at least
over
1000 years. Most of them are near churches.
The UK is a country with amazing many big trees, oaks and sweet
chestnuts up
to 40 feet CBH.
