ENTS:
This months Journal of Forestry has an interesting article: 'The
geography
of American tree species and associated place names', Songlin
Fei, Journal
of Forestry 105: 84-90.
The paper tells us that 400 places in the U.S. are named
Oakdale, and has
a table that shows the frequency with which streams, summits,
lakes,
populated places, valleys, schools, etc. are named after
individual tree
species like beech or butternut, several tree species (buckeye,
walnut,
etc.) or many tree species (maple, oak).
It show two pages of color maps of places named after trees in
relation to
the range of the trees.
