ENTS,
I have posted a spreadsheet on the Google site in the files section
entitled tree_shrub.xls. This is a three sheet spreadsheet that
lists all of the trees and shrubs in the USDA database http://plants.usda.gov/index.html
that are found in eastern United States, including those states
bordering on the west side of the Mississippi River. By these
definitions:
Shrub: Perennial, woody plant with a single stem (trunk), normally
greater than 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) in height; under certain
environmental conditions, some tree species may develop a
multi-stemmed or short growth form (less than 4 meters or 13 feet in
height).
Tree: Perennial, woody plant with a single stem (trunk), normally
greater than 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) in height; under certain
environmental conditions, some tree species may develop a
multi-stemmed or short growth form (less than 4 meters or 13 feet in
height).
The sheet include Family, Species, Common Name, Abbreviation Code,
and some other miscellaneous data. The idea is that this list can be
used as a basis for a variety of lists compiled by ENTS including
among others Maximum Tree height, ages, girth information, and TDI
maximums. The sheet are in excel format and can be manipulated to
whatever need might present itself.
