ENTS,

The recent discussion about Wollemi pine made me think of another
unique conifer, Sciadopitys verticillata, a Japanese endemic, and the
only member of its genus and family. It's another "living fossil",
with records dating back 230 million years. The "needles' are actually
cladophylls.

I've posted a couple of photos from a botanical garden here in N Ohio.
The tree is about 30' tall, with three stems.

Steve,

This is a rather " fuzzy " conifer. I have not seen this one.

Umbrella pine grows well here in SE Pa. We have several on the
champion list. Man are they expensive at the nursery though!! I
think they look good when small, but they get ragged with age, kind of
like an Austrian Pine.

We went to visit a large monkey puzzle tree in Delaware last year, but
the last winter had killed it. That is the one related to Wollemi I
believe. Very strange and sharp tree.
