Nutmeg hickory (Carya myristiciformis), It turns out this grove is one of the northernmost populations and it is not known from NC according to the sources I reviewed. Apparently, it has bark extremely conducive to lichens because they were absolutely covered! I measured three of the largest hickories, all of which will qualify as new state champions.
