Dogwood flower showing typical flat 4-petal
shape. Photo by Edward Frank, May 25, 2005. The
"petals" are actually 4 broadly elliptical
shaped, white, bracts. The flowers themselves are actually
yellow and form a crowded head in the center of the white
bracts. The combination of bracts and flowers are
colloquially called flowers.

Luthringer comments: Notice how the veins come out of the midrib of the leave and gently flow in an arching pattern that reluctantly reach the edges of the margin of the leaf... classic dogwood
veination. |
