ENTS,
I posted a while back an Indian Legend in Biloxi about a Chiefs
Daughter and a Brave from another tribe who were in Love with each
other. The Legend states that the Biloxi Chief stated when yonder Live
Oak grows a ring in it, you can marry him. The tree grew a hollow ring
and the couple wed. Last weekend I Photographed the tree which grows
adjacent to Hwy 90 on Biloxi beach. They are putting in new curbes and
resurfacing the Hwy and I wanted to make sure our Oaks are well
treated. 

They have had much stress in the last few years due to
Hurricane Katrina. But all in all they are coming back and look quite
healthy, with about 20-30 percent loss coast wide. When there are
thousands of Live Oaks lining the Hwy you really don't notice just
one, but this one (Ring-in-the-Oak) stands out. It is the only Live
Oak I know of with a hole in a limb!
