Rush Songs

Mentioning peoples shortsightedness with religion or their ignorance
of the natural word reminds me of a song by Rush. This song came out
back in the 70s. It's title is " Natural Science ".

Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson

I. tide pools
When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society

A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea...

Wheels within wheels
In a spiral array
A pattern so grand
And complex
Time after time
We lose sight of the way
Our causes cant see
Their effects

Ii. hyperspace
A quantum leap forward
In time and in space
The universe learned to expand

The mess and the magic
Triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world, out of hand

Computerized clinic
For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band

In their own image
Their world is fashioned ---
No wonder they dont understand

Wheels within wheels
In a spiral array
A pattern so grand
And complex
Time after time
We lose sight of the way
Our causes cant see
Their effects

Iii. permanent waves
Science, like nature
Must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely serve us well

Art as expression ---
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely help us along

The most endangered species ---
The honest man
Will still survive annihilation
Forming a world ---
State of integrity
Sensitive, open, and strong

Wave after wave
Will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide
Will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on
As it was...

James,

The passage "The most endangered species --- The honest man", speaks volumes. Thanks for sending us Rush's lyrics. Great contribution. Please keep them coming.

Bob

" The Trees " off of " Hemispheres ".

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(and theyre quite convinced theyre right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks cant help their feelings
If they like the way theyre made
And they wonder why the maples
Cant be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream `oppression!`
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
the oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light
Now theres no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw ...

James Parton's post of Rush lyrics got me thinking. Would a traffic cop
dismiss a speeding ticket if I told them I was listening to "Spirit of the
Radio" while driving? I have long thought they would, provided they had any
clue just how good the song is! Rush fans know that it is impossible not to
speed up a bit when that song is on. I also can't quite seem to get it loud
enough.

Will,

~laughing~ " Red Barchetta " is the same way, it gets your blood
pumping, like many of Rush songs do. What is your favorite disc by
them? With me it is between " Moving Pictures " and " Permenent Waves
". I have all their stuff up to the early 90s but don't have anything
more recent. Check out " The Trees " on " Hemispheres ".

That cop would probably still give you a ticket, unless maybe he was a
real Rush fan too!

I'm sure you have all heard the song "Trees" by Rush? It is a tale of
one species competing with another for sunlight but...in the end they
both succumb to the saw.

Bruce Cockburn has a song entitled "If a Tree Falls in the Forest"
which is really good.

I particularly like "Rush Live in Rio", awesome DVD.

What about Tom Sawyer or some of the instrumentals

Neil Peart, drummer extraordinaire, has a website if you want to see
what he is really capable of.

They have a really big sound for just THREE guys.
