Michele:
NNFP is currently undergoing a revitalization. For years it was
headquartered out of Providence, RI but there is now a new
leadership working out of
southeastern OH. I am not a member of NNFP (it was started by the
same people
that started the Forest Guild) but I have worked with many of the
people who
run the org and I have sponsored a woodlot tour when they had their
national
meeting in Ohio a few years ago.
I would encourage you to check out the website _www.nnfp.org_
( http://www.nnfp.org )
NNFP has a lot of involvement with nontimber forest products and
many facets
of economic development. In the past there has been a lot of cross
pollination with IFCAE the Institute For Culture And Ecology which
is based in Oregon
website _www.ifcae.org_ (http://www.ifcae.org)
IFCAE is very much involved with many aspects of workers rights,
native
culture and forest based businesses, especially non timber forest
products. A
few years ago two of the founders of IFCAE made a road trip across
the country
interviewing growers and harvesters of nontimber commodities with
the result
the first textbook ever published on incorporating NTFP management
into a
forest management program.
Historically, NNFP has had a large proportion of its membership that
are
women. I do not know if that has changed recently.
I hope this helps.
It is funny that you would ask a question about NNFP because I
burned the
midnight oil earlier this week composing a letter of support for a
grant
proposal they are submitting to USDA.
