ENTS, 10 species of Northern Trees on my friends 120 acres in
Northwestern Wisconsin.
Balsam Fir CBH-6'6", H -87.9', Spread-43'
Black (Northern Pin) Oak 10' 3" 67.5' 35'
Northern Red Oak 6'3" 58.9'
32'
Yellow Birch 6'1" 61.3' 25'
Paper Birch 4' 3" 65.2' 30'
Black (Sugar) Maple 7' 72' 34'
White Pine 6' 6" 78.8'
41'
Big Toothed Aspen 5'1" 66.6'
35'
Basswood 15' 64.5 50'
Tamarack 4'2" 58'
21'
All of these trees are about 50-75 years old except the Basswood
and the
Balsam Fir, they are over 100. The Balsam doesn't probably get much
larger.
The property was an old Dairy Farm back in the later 1800's, early
1900's.
Douglas Co., land surrounds his property and extends for miles in
all directions.
Much wildlife there, deer, bear, wolves, coyote, badger, squirrel,
etc.
Red Pine at Minnesota Point. The sandbar at Duluth on Lake Superior. Red, CBH-6'2" Height 72 and Spread-30'. |
White Pine at Minnesota Point. The sandbar at Duluth on Lake Superior. Red, CBH-6'2" Height 72 and Spread-30'. White, CBH-6'4", Height-81' and Spread-32'. |
Pin Oak, CBH-10'3", Height-67.5' and Spread-35'. |
Northern Red, CBH-6'3", Height-58.9' and Spread-32'. |
Sugar Maple, CBH-7', Height-72' and Spread-34'. |
White Pine, CBH-6'6", Height-78.8' and Spread-41'. |
Paper Birch and Yellow Birch contrasts. Largest Birch I measured, 1. Paper, CBH-4'3", Height-64.2' and Spread-30'. 2. Yellow, CBH-6', Height-61.3' and Spread-25'. |
The Black River Valley. |
The Black River Valley in beautiful fall color,a real treat for me. I don't get to see much color like this down south. |
Wisconsin. Balsam Fir, CBH-6'6", Height-87.9' and Spread-43'
|
The North Shore of Lake Superior. A island and Split rock Lighthouse about 75 miles up the Lake from Duluth. This was the most pristine area I think I've been to! |
|
(Red and White Pines at Minn. Point, Black River Valley in Lower
Wis.,
Jay Cooke St. Park in Minn., St. Louis River in Minn., Paper and
Yellow Birch Contrast, and the Lighthouse at Split Rock, Minn., on
the
North Shore of Lake Superior.)
Rucker Index-
Bob the kind of place you describe in Mass! Lee, I also measured
some
White Pine and Red on Minn., Point.
White Pine CBH-6' 2", Height-80', Spread-33'
Red Pine 4' 2" 72' 25'
A Rucker Index of 68.07'
The ages of these trees maybe incorrect but I think I'm close,
perhaps
they are a little older but not much!

Larry,
Wow! That fir is HUGE! I hope you have a photo of it. That has got
to be a

Larry:
I agree, a fir that big is unheard of. Most firs don't live beyond
age 40
due to budworm that attacks firs as they reach maturity.
BTW: There is no black oak and black maple in Douglas county. They
were
probably northern pin oak (Q. ellipsoidalis) and sugar maple.

Lee, Thanks for correcting me. I thought the maple was sugar, but
wasn't sure. I also wasn't sure about the red oak either. I'm
posting
the photos now.
