I am attaching an image of a "big tree" I saw in D.C.
recently. This was at
St. Elizabeth's Hosptial, an historic psychiatric hospital on the
south side
of the Anacostia River. In the image you can use the little sign on
the
tree for scale (sorry there's no person).
The cbh was 4' 10", but that may
be cheating a little since you'll notice the trunk actually gets
wider at
this height than it is lower down. This is not an overly large tree
in
general, but I thought it was very impressive for the species. At
least
it's the largest I've seen. This is a blackhaw, *Viburnum
prunifolium.*

Darian,
That viburnum is huge! But I would measure it at the narrowest point
below
the burls. There is one in Asheville, NC that is close in size that
I have
seen but not measured yet. It may be over 30' tall, too.

Barry,
There is a listing of Champion Trees being maintained by Casey Trees
http://www.caseytrees.org/about/index.html
http://www.caseytrees.org/pdfs/BigTrees.pdf
http://www.caseytrees.org/images/Biggest_BigTrees_8x11.jpg
The group also has an interactive map of every street tree in the
city. As far as ENTS working in the area you can check o our website
and find some reports by Darian Copiz and Mathew Hannum.
The interactive tree map is linked on Casey trees main page at:
http://www.caseytrees.org
The ENTS website also has some links to newspaper articles on
historical trees. That is about it.

I had heard that Casey Trees had a list of big trees, but figured
they were
only street trees since that is what they did an inventory of. I
haven't
seen the list below - thanks for the link. It could be more
extensive
though. I will also be curiuos to visit some on the list and see if
I know
of any larger ones. I have thought of starting a big tree list, but
haven't
gotten around to it yet.
