Poor Mountain Creek   Jess

Poor Mountain Creek flows out of the low mountains north of Walhalla
South Carolina. While the upper part of drainage is relatively flat, the
lower portion of the watershed is composed of many narrow coves of varied
aspects. Hemlock/hardwood canopies with Rhododendron minor and R. maximum
understories occur in most of the north aspect coves while oak/hickory
forest with either open or heath dominated understories is common in the
south facing coves. A couple of flatter areas have more recently logged
tuliptree forest with an abundance of small paw paws in the understory.
Other understory species of interest include chalk maple on the lower part
of the stream and redbud in some of the hardwood coves. Maidenhair fern
is common in some of the coves, and royal fern grows scattered on the
slopes in one cove. White oak is probably the most common species
throughout the area.
