I measured a red oak a few weeks ago that came in at 9.7 x 137.6 It
is located in Willistown Twp Chester county. It didn't look like
much when We saw it, but it turned out to be a whopper.
This same day we found five more 18'+ cbh sycamores in the same
township.

This same property had three more sycamores. A 20', a 19' and a 18'.
Heights weren't anything grand.
I also visited a residence in Chadds ford where the state champ
yellow
buckeye, Chinese Chestnut(old champ), and Cuke magnolia (old champ)
reside.
Buckeye is 13.6 x 120.5 x 61 for 299 AF points

That red oak is a new PA height champ! The previous champ was one
that Will
measured in Fairmont to 9.7ft CBH x 135.2ft high. I think the
tallest in the
NE is the one Tom has in Zoar Valley at 140.3ft. At least we know
what we're
shooting for...

Scott,
Those sycamores are great! I haven't seen one that big yet. My
sister tells me that a pool buddy of hers has a sycamore that you
can
fit 20 people in. I'm not sure of this as it might be the beer
talking. Next week I'm going to a small state park called Dixon
Springs in Southern Illinois. I want to try to verify the tree id
and
measure it. Just by eyeball, I say it is 3-4' diameter and about
120-130' tall.

The sycamores most likely date to the houses they are planted
around,
as they are strategically placed to shade the house and springhouse.
My guess would be 250 to 300 years old. The area was settled in the
late 1600's so they could be even older. I usually go with the age
of
the house, I am guessing the houses were built in the 1720's to 30's
