Sir,
I didn't see a place to e-mail Mr. Rucker directly, so I will
use this
address to make my comment about his list of "Great Eastern
Trees, Past and
Present" at http://www.nativetreesociety.org/bigtree/great_eastern_trees.htm
I wish to encourage him to include the Waverley Oaks (which were
near
Watertown, NY) on this page. I learned about them by reading old
periodicals at the Library of Congress "American
Memory" website. Search
at this address: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ncpsquery.html
Simply type
in "Waverley Oaks" and follow the links for The
Atlantic monthly. / Volume
40, Issue 203, September 1877, and Garden and Forest/ Volume 3,
Issue 104,
February 19, 1890. These are two of the best articles.
In 2001, I read on the State of Massachusetts (Division of
Conservation and
Recreation) website that The Last Waverly Oak was declared a
Famous and
Historic Tree in June, 2001. Acorns were being collected so that
it can be
propagated. The webpage where I read this information,
http://www.state.ma.us/mdc/CommishJune_01.htm#4
, is no longer online,
except in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. See
http://web.archive.org/web/20010708122246/http://www.state.ma.us/mdc/Commish
June_01.htm#4 which is a "snapshot" of the original
page. Internet searchs
for The Waverly Oaks yield only a few relevant sentences. The
memory of
these mighty trees is fading rapidly and it's a shame.
