Measured a large Magnolia in Gulfport, Ms. yesterday. I noticed the tree
a couple of months ago when I was measuring a nice Live Oak in the area.
I got permission to measure it from the property owner, who is involved
in the Ms. land trust society and some other groups. I was invited to
attend a meeting next week. Perhaps I will make some good contacts
there. She is also involved in the planting of several thousand trees in
the 6 coastal counties resulting from tree loss in Hurricane Katrina.

Anyway, the Magnolia is the second largest specimen I have measured,
somewhere around 200 years old. Growing in the old towne of Handsboro,
which in the 1800's was a thriving community in South Ms. The tree has
lost some of its height but still is impressive. CBH-16', Height-70.2'
and Spread-81'.

It is not surprising that the big Gulfport magnolia is still standing
after surely enduring more than a few hurricanes over its lifetime.

Southern magnolia rates pretty high up on the wind firmness scale.
