Lee,
Are you familiar with several large (25-40" DBH) E.
Hemlocks in
Minneapolis' Theo Wirth Park? I have been a fan of these trees
for years
and have always wondered if they are a native stand or planted
many
moons ago. There are several in the Butler Wildflower garden
that appear
significantly younger and the stand looks to be planted but
these 7-8
outside the garden are large enough to possibly be native. Any
ideas?

Brandon:
I have seen the hemlocks in the garden, which were planted by
Eloise Butler
during the first decade of the 20th Century, but have not seen
the big
hemlocks outside the garden. There is always something new to
discover in
the Minneapolis Park System. I doubt that they are native unless
they are
in a swale like the tamarack forest in Wirth Park. The uplands
in that
area were oak savanna and it seems unlikely that hemlock could
persist in
such an area.

Thanks for the input, Lee. These trees are in a valley of mostly
hardwoods but it has always been their size and spatial
arrangement that
has intrigued me as to their origin. I'll do some accurate
measuring on
them soon and keep you posted.
