Lee:

Yesterday, I got a call from Kate at Hartwick Pines State Park. She has been
keeping precise records of the circumference growth of the pines at Hartwick
and she informs me that they had one heck of a growing season this past year.
They had copious amounts of snow and a long snow melt period and then heavy
spring rains. She said some of the pines put on 2 inches of circumference
growth. That sounds incredible. I wonder if she measured the circumference in
the same place?

Bob:

Two inches in circumference is about 2/3 inch diameter, which is ring width
of 1/3 inch. I have seen plenty of white pines do that, especially near the
basal swell. Extremely old trees are unlikely to grow that fast.
