Because of a reference in National Wildlilfe to old growth at
Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, I have corresponded with cemetery
officials. There is apparently no old growth but there are large
trees. Linley Schmidt has tried without success to call them to the
attention of the Champion Tree officials for Tennessee. If any ENTS
people are in the vicinity of Memphis, he would appreciate their
coming out and examining the trees. The trees include a hackberry
with 184 inch circumference, a tulip tree with 219 inch
circumference, and an Atlantic White-cedar with 134 inch
circumference. Points on the Champion Tree application forms are
346, 417, and 258 respectively. Linley can be reached at linley@elmwoodcemetery.org
. The cemetery is at 824 South Dudley in Memphis.

Mary,
I live about 300 miles from Memphis in St. Louis and
have always wanted to go to Memphis to visit their
zoo, the Peabody Hotel, and to listen to the Blues. I
will email Linley and see if I can arrange a time to
go. I am a little busy at the moment, building a
house, maintianing the family farm, etc. so it could
be a little while before I could get there.
