Was pretty impressed with this White Oak on my recent trip to McMinville TN.
pre 1700's pioneer Meeting tree on the Old Kentucky Trail measures 21'
8" but need a correct height and width.

R. Heard,

Nice tree. The low limbs remind me of Live Oak.

I checked the birthing tree a couple years ago when visiting some nurseries in TN in winter. At the time it did not have a lightning protection system in it.

I contacted TN Urban Forestry Council to see who cared for the tree, and volunteered to install the system if the tree owner bought the materials. Last I heard now has a lightning protection system recently installed in it. I think it was installed by Cortese tree. Did you notice if it had a system in it. I didnt see one in the pic.

It is one of the best White Oaks ANYWHERE!- way better than the WYE OAK!

William/R. Heard,

Is it hard to find the tree in McMinnville?

I have been wanting to make a trip up to the Sparta, TN area to see
some healthy hemlocks and I notice on the map that McMinnville is in
the same area. Might as well also see a grand, old white oak while I'm
up there.

ENTS,

There is a nice big white oak in SW Pennsylvania: Girth 263, Height 85, spread 135 Points 382
There are photos on this page: http://www.pabigtrees.com/trees/species/quercus_oak.htm  and here:
http://www.pabigtrees.com/trees/images/00303%20Quercus%20alba%20C%20Trunk.jpg

I realize it is not the biggest, but it looks really impressive in the photos. Here is one view of the tree (I have not seen it myself):

I definitely need to check it out.

American Forests says its champion is: girth 312, height 86, spread 116, Points 427, Brunswick, VA

James-
One of my favorites, although not nearby, is the Charleville Oak, with a bit of mystery, and history:

"The Oak was the Sacred Tree of the Druids and in the grounds the Druid's Initiation Circle reminds us that this was a Sacred Ritual site. The castle was built in by Charles Bury, the 1st Earl of Charleville, between 1798 and 1812 and is considered one of the finest Gothic Revival Castles in Ireland."

Did not see any sign of Lightening Protection. Did I miss the ground?
Will go back and look next trip South and if needed also visit with
Dr. Sabo to get permission to protect it. Tree is owned by McMinville
Dialysis Clinic (Dr. R.P. Sabo) is right on TN 70S across from the
hospital on left hand side going South, You can't miss it as it's 50ft
from the highway. Will get a height and width if I have time. It's by
far the nicest White Oak I've ever seen live or in pictures.
