ENTS,
Over the New Years weekend I went to visit my dad & brother who
live
in Abbeville county SC. My brother David who lives in Calhoun Falls
has a really nice oak tree in his yard which I measured. It is a
respectable 15' 1 1/4" cbh. I believe it is a Willow Oak due to
its
small thin willow-like leaves. I would estimate the tree to be less
than 100 feet tall. The acorns are fairly small. About an half-inch
or
so in size.
Also I took Howard Hannah the pictures I had taken of him & his
oak. I
also printed out the ENTS report on his oak and gave it to him. He
was
elated, knowing that anyone who accessed ENTS the world over can see
him & his magnificent Post Oak.
Dad has a nice oak of uncertain type. He believes it to be a Pin
Oak/
Red Oak hybrid. It is about 60/70 feet tall & has a
circumference of
8' 9 3/4", not especially large or unique but still pretty. It
has
grown in the nearly 20 years he has owned the property. When he
bought
it the tree has a big hole caused by hunters target practice. You
could dig lead & debris from the hole in the tree at the time.
Now the
hole has entirely grown over, only a trace of it remains. In time
the
tree will only become larger and prettier. Howard & Dad both
live in
Lowndesville SC.
While riding around the area I noticed a number of oaks of size.
Most
are in peoples yards. I am going to have to explore the area for
large
or unusual trees. Dad knows of a forest outside of McCormick SC that
he said the trees are so tall that it makes him dizzy looking up at
them. With him, I will check it out. He said they were pines.
Probably
Loblolly or Slash. Of course I will do a post when that occurs.
I will post some pictures from this visit to the file page.
