ENTS, Dale,
Today I went looking for a big sassafras tree near Stump Creek, PA.
It was good to get out. I have been down pretty much with bronchitis
for the past three weeks, punctuate only by trips to the doctor, and
work. I am feeling better today and needed to do something. The
sassafras was reported to Dale as being 54" dbh. we both
wondered if it really was cbh rather than dbh, but in ay case it was
worth checking out. I made .one trip down following the directions
had transcribed, unfortunately the directions beyond the Camouflage
Inn did not seem to match what was present on the ground. I returned
home somewhat frustrated. looking on Google Maps I found the name
Kramer Road - the missing couple of words in the directions made all
the difference. At first I planned to put off for another day a
return trip - but eventually I hopped into my van and was off again.
I found the property fairly easily. Unfortunately there was not any
big sassafras present. I spoke to the landowner, he did not know
what a sassafras tree was, but he did did not know of any trees in
that size range in the immediate area. The biggest is a beech about
2 1/2 to three feet diameter. I spoke to his neighbor and he did not
know of any big sassafras tee either. certainly there was none in
front of the house as suggested by the directions.
The landowner said he had some of the property adjacent to the house
logged three years ago. It is my guess that if the tree was present,
it may have been in the area logged. Or it may not have been there
at all. Better luck next time guess. I have his number and when the
leaves come out I will stop by again to look for sassafras, but I
know I did not miss any as big as was reported.
