Martin Park, Delaware County and surrounding environs.
Michael B. Dunn

This Saturday, I had the opportunity to check out a park where I had
previously seen a rather large Tulip Tree. Martin Park is located in
Delaware County Pa and roughly follows a stream bed for about a mile,
before becoming private property. Most of the trees within the park
boundaries are nothing to write home about, but one day last spring I
hiked further down the stream to see what I could see and found some
impressively large tulips, oaks, and beeches.
The most impressive tulip is in advanced stages of decay due to its
main lead being blown out. It also has some large cavities some 15
feet up the main stem.
The figures:
Tulip 1
Cbh; 13.6
Height; 114.5

Two more tulips are further downstream. The first is decidedly healthy
but the second also has a blown out top. The second maintains its
girth nearly to the top. This must have been a massive specimen in
its day.

Tulip 2.
Cbh 10.1
Height 124.6

Tulip 3
Cbh 10.3
Height 103.2

Other trees in the area
Red Oak 1
CBH 6.5
Height 101.1

Red Oak 2
CBH 9.2
Height 105.3

White Ash 1
CBH 7.4
Height 115.3

Beech 1
Cbh 10.6
Height 107.8

Later the same day I went to measure a huge white oak behind Goose
Creek Grille off of route 926. I remember this tree as a youth and it
was the focal point of a community park. Since then it has been
hedged in by construction and nearly forgotten. I had to scramble
over a road barrier to reach it. Much to my dismay the tree is in
advanced stages of decay. I quickly recorded my data as my truck was
parked on the roadside in busy traffic, but didn’t take the time to
calculate on site, so my height data is scued and I will have to
remeasure. However the girth is still impressive at 15.2 cbh.

Today I recorded two more Tulips on the Middleton Estate.

Tulip Tree 1
Cbh 11.1
Height 130.2

This tree is slated for removal as it has developed rot in the bole.

Tulip Tree 2
Height: 126.9
