I am researching a book called Pen's Woods, as many of you know.
Yesterday I received some pictures in the mail with a note about
a big ole sycamore in Union County, Pa. In 1982 the
circumference was 24' 6". The latest measurement is 27'
2". There is evidence in the pictures of a top being broken
out a long time ago. I think I see a large creek or river in the
background. Are any of my fellow ENTS near this tree and could
officially check it out? Next to it is a springhouse that has
seen better days that is supposed to be the oldest standing
stone house in Union and Snyder counties. The tree doesn't have
a limb until about 20-30 feet. It is believed to be 275-325
years old. The book also names another sycamore in Union county
1/4 mile below the Millmont Dam near Millmont in Lewis township.
It was 27' cbh in 1982!! I hope it is still there! This one is
believed to be 325 years old or more.

Sorry it is a picture of a picture that was blurry to begin
with.

Scott,
That sycamore looks just too darn big to be true! Unreal. The
account of a
massive sycamore along the Allegheny River during Celeron's
expedtion in 1748
now seems a little more believeable after seeing that pic.
Maybe it's a field in the background? Any idea on property
owner? I rarely get
an opportunity these days to do exploring that far east. I'm
just running
around too much between the park & Erie. But, every once
& awhile I do get an
opportunity to drive past that area on I-80. Sure would be nice
to drop down
and find it if that opportunity arises.

Dale
it is in town (don't have the name in front of me) behind an old
meeting hall and across from the general store. I have a contact
name and number of the Dr. that sent me the pics. I am more
intrigued by the chance of a 30' tree near the Millmont dam. If
it was 27' in 1982 and near water, it may be 30' by now. I may
have to make a stop on my way to Cook in April to see these
trees in person.
