Hello,
I am new to the Eastern Native Tree Society listserve. I live in
Warren, PA
and work for an organization called Friends of Allegheny
Wilderness (
http://www.pawild.org
). We are working toward designating additional areas
of the Allegheny National Forest as federal wilderness under the
1964
Wilderness Act. I have read the messages about the large
sycamores and
silver maples on King Islands, one of the Allegheny Wilderness
Islands, with
interest. I have been to the Anders Run Natural Area, Hearts
Content,
Tionesta, and Cook's Forest State Park old-growth areas many
times.
I received a message last week I thought I'd relay to this list,
though this
information might be common knowledge to members here, I don't
know. A Mr.
Daniel Toth left me a message stating that the state co-champion
northern
red oak is located about a quarter mile behind his camp in
Cook's Forest,
Farmington Township, Clarion County. He says it measures 114'
tall and 18'
cbh. He says it is a well-kept secret. He thought it would be
neat to
publicize this tree, and invited me to call Dale Luthringer at
Cook Forest
State Park or himself at xxx-xxx-xxxx for more information.

I believe Dale and I measured the tree a few years ago with Mr.
Toth.

Scott,
The height is all laser, dude. It's absolutely awful to try to
find the
top on this thing. Will was the only one to get through the
canopy, and
that was from directly underneath. Here are the stats from the
last
time Will, Bob, Gary, and I measured it on 4/19/02:
Northern red oak (Quercus rubra), Clarion County, Cook Forest
State Park
16.7ft CBH
75.5ft crown spread
120.4ft high
AF Points = 339.7
It's all forest grown single stem too.
