ENTS,

On 9/12/07 I had the opportunity to record some data for Oil Creek State
Park. I had a meeting with their naturalist to age a couple of sugar
maples for future programming. After the meeting, I had an opportunity
to collect some tree data for the park.

The sugar maples I cored were part of an old fence row along the creek
and adjacent Blood Farm tract. They were just starting to mature and
not very old, ~90 years old.

Most other trees were not noteworthy in stature, except two. One was a
nice sycamore along Oil Creek, just downstream from museum grounds that
went to 13.8ft CBH x 110ft high. The other was a new PA height champ
record for Am. Hornbeam at 2.1ft CBH x 43ft high. This just barely tops
Scott Wade's massive hornbeam currently listed as PA state champ in
Valley Forge at 8.6ft CBH x 43ft high.

Bob,

What do you have for hornbeam records in the NE? I don't see one listed
on your old MASS height file from 2004.

I was able to get just enough species for a RI. I certainly didn't have
enough trees measured to do the site justice. Many of my shots were
taken on trees across the creek, hence little CBH data. Some of the
small draws and valleys draining into Oil Creek are sure to have taller
specimens of many of the species listed. The day's stats follow:
