Bob,
I remeasured the tall pitch pine at Black Bear Cabins in
Cooksburg
(adjacent to Cook Forest). It's old measurement two years ago
was 4.2ft
CBH x 87.7ft high. That same sprig is now 87.9ft high.
Historically,
I've only been able to find one shot through the canopy, but in
no way
could see to measure the whole top. Some red oaks have fallen on
its
western side revealing a clear view of that side of the crown.
I've
confirmed that side to be 92.9ft high. I found another partial
shot to
two twigs on the eastern side of the crown but could not confirm
either
at 93-94ft. It might just be a bit higher, but I'll have to wait
until
leaf off to try again. CBH is a little bigger now, so it
currently
stands at 4.3ft CBH x 92.9ft high. That's at least our current
PA
height record, maybe even northeast.

Dale:
Congratulations! The pitch pine that I
measured on Mount Tom State
Reservation is 92 feet tall. It may have grown significantly in
the last
couple of years. because they have been wet. I imagine the pine
is now
at least 92.5 feet, but I don't know. Looks like I need to get
out there
and check it out. Anyway, good show.
