ENTS,

I (Ed Frank) received this email  regarding a Maple to be measured:

I have a huge hard maple that measures 16’-10” CBH, I was wondering if any local society would come out and measure it up, I live in Spartansburg, PA. Crawford Co. the tree is in one of my farm fields and hardly seen by the public.

Greg,

Dale Luthringer quickly made arrangements to visit and measure the maple tree. The results are as follows:

Greg

Thanks again for letting me come up and measure your nice sugar maple.

Here's the stats again:

16.5ft CBH x 88.1ft high x 71.1ft avg crown spread = 304 American Forest big tree points

That makes it the 3rd largest known in the state! See below link:

I've attached some pics.

Thank-you!!!!

Dale

... I remeasured our sugar maple here in "Philly" today. It came in at 14' 8"cbh x 96.1 x 93' spread. for 295 points. So we have co champions. Your new tree being the bigger of the two at 304 points. This tree is completely hollow and has a huge crack in it. The top is dying back some. The tree was planted in the mid 1800's by the Painter Brothers.

Scott,

I’ll let Mr. Nagy know about his sugar maple. I’m sure he’ll be glad to hear of it getting bumped up the list. His tree is doing quite well. I don’t have a clue on the age of his tree, although the elderly Amish man he just bought the land it’s on from, remembers the tree as always being large from childhood. It was used regularly as a place to come in out of the heat after working the fields all day.
