Ents,
Dale
Found and measured a big ole red oak yesterday. In the town of
Media Pa. This survivor was in the back yard of a home built in
1872. The tree is supposed to be a marker tree for when the town
of Media was laid out. It was just over 81 ft tall and had a cbh
of 21.1'. The tree is in dangerous shape, as it is hollow enough
for a man of my stature to stoop down and walk inside the tree.
You can see straight through the base of the tree. I estimate
that the first branch is over thirty feet from the ground, so
this is a forest remnant. It has been "pruned" or it
would be much taller and wider. The remaining cuts were over
12" in diameter. In 1965 the cbh was 16.1 and in 1982 it
was 17.3, so it appears to be growing. It estimated that this
tree is 300-320 years old. If it doesn't fall
over, I will visit it again next year to check on it's size.

YOWWW!
Nice red oak, Scott! Do you have a pic? Cook's large red oak
stood at
339.7 AF points back at 4/19/02 (measured by none other than the
illustrious two-Bob Leverett & Will Blozan). Looks like I
need to get
out and re-measure it. Clear Creek State Park listed their
double red
oak at 351.9 AF points (18.9ft CBH x 86.5ft crown x 103.5ft
high).
We've got another dandy measured in Ridgway to 335.5 AF points.
Here's
the quick run-down:
Tree CBH
(ft) crown
(ft) Height
(ft) AF
Points
Media 21.1 ? 81.1
334.2+
Cook Forest 16.7 75.5 120.4
339.7
Ridgway 16.9 81.8 112.2
335.5
Clear Creek 18.9 (2x) 86.5 103.5
351.9
What did you get for a crown measurement on that Media N. red
oak?

Dale
spread was 56x40
I came up with 346 points?
21.1'=253 inches cbh @ 4.5
+81 tall
+12 spread
I don't know how much longer it will stay up. but it deserves
recognition. I will send you a pic or three!
I really wish I could have seen it before it was hacked, I
mean pruned. : ( It would have blown the other reds out of the
water with additional height and spread points.

Wow,
For such a large tree, it sure has a small spread. hacked you
say, hmmm.
That still is quite a respectable girth. I find it amazing to be
able
to walk inside some of these huge monsters. Will has even
rappelled
down inside some of them. I'm sure there's a link on the ENTS
site
somewhere to his recalling of the event.
