From: "Dale Luthringer"
ENTS,
Over Christmas break, I had the opportunity to find and re-measure a
number of trees that fellow Erie, PA native Ken Fromenecht recorded
in
his pamphlet on big trees in Erie County.
The first tree measured was a decent black cherry at the North
Plateau
Cemetery on 12/24/07. It lies on the edge of the cemetery adjacent
to
the old Erie Extension Canal. The old canal bed now serves as an
actively used railroad bed. It's dimensions are 16.3ft CBH x 87.1+ft
high x 82.5ft avg crown for 303AF Points. I have my reservations
that
it is an old fused double, but still an impressive tree to behold.
Mr.
George Smith, Civil War veteran, is buried near its base. He lived
from
1849-1899. Assuming this tree was there when he was buried, the tree
would be at least 108 years old.
On 12/26/07 my wife and I dropped by to visit some friends in
Northeast,
PA, then took some time to measure a few trees on Ken's list within
the
grounds of the Mercyhurst College-Northeast Campus. First was a
decent
European larch to 8.8ft CBH x 93.4ft high x 46.8ft avg spread for
211AF
Points. Next was a copper beech to 9.8ft CBH x 68ft high x 68.1ft
avg
spread for 203AF Points. Last tree of the day was my first ever
measured bald cypress at 9.6ft CBH x 81.5ft high x 46ft avg spread
for
208AF Points.
None are new state champs, but all are definitely the largest I've
come
across for this extreme NW PA county.
Dale
