ENTS,
This past month, on June 22, 2009, I again visited a
large American Chestnut in Clear Creek State Park, PA. I
first visited the tree in October 2005 based upon GPS
coordinates given to me by Gary Gilmore of the American
Chestnut Foundation
http://www.nativetreesociety.org/fieldtrips/penna/clearcreeksf/clear_...
The tree measured 72 feet tall, and an nice 51.75 inches in
girth. This spring I took Dale Luthringer to se the tree
and we confirmed the original height measurement. I could
not see any indications of blight on the tree. There were
numerous spiny chestnut casings on the forest floor, but
none of these looked to have been viable. The tree in the
past has been artificially pollinated by ACF to produce nuts
for their research projects.
On June 22, 2009 I revisited the site to take some photos
and a video sequence. The video clip, 1:51 in length, is
posted on Facebook
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=109031566957
and on YouTube

There are not too many opportunities to see relatively
mature American Chestnut bark so I am including some photos
here for your examination:
