20'7" CBH Northern Red Oak photos   Steve Galehouse

I stopped today and measured a beautiful Red Oak I've admired for years.
The circumference is 20' 7", average crown spread 107', height about the
same as crown spread based on photos(no way to accurately measure
height). It's located in Evergreen Cemetery in Westlake, Ohio, on Center
Ridge Road(US Rt. 20).

The tree seems to be in excellent shape. The gravestones date from the
early 1800's, I think, so I presume the tree might be around 200 years
old. Photos attached.

That is a good looking red oak. I would think it to be older than 200. Possibly closer to 300 depending on the growing conditions. We have trees that size listed as Penn trees which are supposed to be 324 yrs or older here in Pa.

Steve,

Thanks for the pics. That's an impressive read oak. I wish we had
some open grown ones like that down here in the southeast. Your
method of estimating the age sounds reasonable to me. Given the size
crown on that tree, it may still be growing rapidly.
