Subject: Floating tamarack "bog"
To:
ENTS-
Here are a couple of photos of a forest type many are not
familiar with--a
floating mat of Sphagnum that supports a dense stand of leatherleaf,
sweet
gale, pitcher plant and cotton grass with tamarack and white pine
as the
arborescent species. The pines are declining due to higher water
levels in
recent years. A mature hemlock/white pine forest can be seen in the
background of the second photo. Central Ontario.

The pines in the bog are white pines, P. strobus. Red pines are
common in
the area(as in photo), as are jack pines, but always occur on drier
sites.
