ENTS,
Joy & I went on a nice hike of the Shope Creek section of Pisgah
National Forest this last Monday. The forest is a beautiful one with
quite a few fall colors still left. Especially the oaks &
beeches.
Beech
I
saw few really large diameter trees but did see some nice beeches
better than 2 ft dbh & a tulip of around the same size. A really
nice
oak about 4ft dbh ( maybe a little better ) was found. White Pine,
Sourwood, Black Gum, maple, especially Striped Maple, American Holly
&
Sassafras were common here too. Of course there was the ever-present
rhodo. I also found a small number of American Chestnut sprouts but
none were above 6ft tall. I will send Ed some pictures for posting
with this post on the ENTS website when he gets his computer back
up.
I cannot get Yahoo Mail to let me insert a picture for the life of
me....

The Forest Service has plans to log & develop this area in the
future.
I agree it needs a public access, it lacks one. Joy knows someone
who
lives near the private entrance gate giving us a place to park our
car
so we could access the forest. Shope Creek Forest is located above
Riceville near the Oteen area of Asheville NC. About 5 miles back in
behind the VA Hospital. Joy lives about 3 miles from Shope Creek.
The
Southern Appalachian Biodiversity Project is submitting a proposal
to
the USFS to halt logging there & to designate more of the area
as old
growth, since trees older than 200 years are believed to reside
there.
I have attached some links concerning this. The SABP had a survey
concerning this on their website that I filled out but they have
since
joined with WildSouth & I have not been able to find the link to
it.
It may have been already submitted to the USFS. I found out about
The
Shope Creek Project while talking to a member of the SABP during the
Bele Chere Festival last July.

James,
I bet the sourwoods have great color up there now, or probably just
past it. I have one that I transplanted from the woods in '98 that
is
currently a exquisite, reddish-purple here in the deep South. One of
my favorite small trees.
Sourwood flowers also makes for excellent honey, and I normally buy
a
small batch mail order from N.C. every year.

ENTS,
I am attaching a Shope Creek PDF file on the discision that the USFS
came to on the future of the Shope Creek section of Pisgah National
Forest in WNC. I feel they chose a compromise that is somewhat
better than their original plan but not as good as the one that SABP
submitted. Thanks to all who submitted proposals on this project.
