ENTS,
Billy Hill, a fellow workmate at General Electric where I am emloyed
told me of a huge Tulip Poplar near his home in Flat Rock NC, just
outside of Hendersonville. It is located near the Carl Sandburg Home
on Memenger Drive. Today I parked my car at the Flat Rock post
office and walked the short walk up Memenger drive where the tree is
located on the right in a semi-wooded area between two homes. I knew
the tree was sizeable at a distance but when I got up close I said
WoW!! With my tape in hand I measured its circumference and it came
out to be a whopping 16 feet 6 inches! It is the largest tuliptree
that I have seen outside of Joyce Kilmer or the Great Smokies. While
I don't have a clinometer or laser ( yet ) I would guess the tree to
be between 75 to 100 feet tall. It's height is not outstanding but
its girth is what makes it noticeable.
I have attached two pictures of it taken today and one taken last
summer.
