I recently posted a brief site description of the Laurel Knob area of
McDowell County, NC at primalnature.org under the updates section.
The patch of old-growth around Laurel Knob is one of my favorites in
Pisgah NF, that section of the Black Mountains has one of the highest
concentrations of OG outside the Smokies. I think many of you would
enjoy a visit.

The report is here: http://primalnature.org/Laurel_Knob.pdf

Josh,

I would like to visit that area of PNF. I will have to do some
research on it. I think Rob Messick found some big Tuliptrees there a
while back.

James,

Rob was the person who discovered this site, back in 2005. He also
discovered a site on Woods Mountain this summer with some 4'+ dbh
poplars, and that was written up at primalnature by Mary Davis, and is
probably the site you are thinking of.

I don't know where on Woods Mountain that site is, but I am glad to
inform you about some of the hotspots at Laurel Knob in off list
discussion.
