ENTS,
Sunday a week ago, after leaving Courthouse Falls, Joy and I rode
over the Blue Ridge Parkway returning home. I stopped by John Rock
Overlook which is located just above Graveyard Fields. Back in 2002
with my then-wife Cheri and my daughter Sarah, we had a picnic
there. I noticed the area had abundant hawthorn trees. One near the
picnic table was one of the biggest I had seen at the time. Six
years and one wife later I returned to measure the trees. The first
one is 18.99 feet tall and 2 feet in girth. The second one measured
is located near the trail at the other end of the parking lot. It is
14.40 feet tall and 2.5 feet in girth. Numerous others can be found
in the vicinity. Joy patiently waited in the car while I measured
the trees.
Can anyone on the ENTS list aid in identifying the type of hawthorn
these are?
