ENTS,

Last Wednesday on her way home from work, my soon to be wife Joy noticed how large the trees were on the property of Calvary Episcopal Church. She stopped and took a few photos and brought them back to show me. I saw a cemetery full of not only gravestones but really nice trees! The Cemetery is about 150 years old and the trees have had a chance to obtain a good size. Saturday we went back to check the site out and my first word on sight of the trees was WoW! . 15 of them had a circumference of 10 feet or greater! Several others had a girth above 8.5 feet cbh. The most outstanding tree was in my opinion the Dawn Redwood. I think the current NC state record is at the Biltmore Estate. I visited it last year. This Redwood is really close to it in size. Maybe I can get a laser-wielding ent ( Like Will Blozan ) to measure the height on the tree and see if it has a chance against the Biltmore tree. They were some species I had trouble identifying, especially since they are no
leaves yet on the trees. Anyway, here are the cbh measurements. I am not sure of the species of oak I have listed as Willow Oak but the foliage is willow like and the bark is a match in my guides. The willow like leaves are easily found on the ground beneath these trees as are the small acorns.

I have attached some pictures to this post as well as uploaded some to the file page. One tree I forgot to measure was a nice Dogwood. Calvary also has some decent Norway Spruce.

I measured another large oak coming home in the rain from Calvary. It was 13' 5" cbh and located across from Manual Woodworkers & Weavers.

James,

Nice photos. That dawn redwood is impressive. Unless I'm mistaken,
after rediscovery the first dawn redwoods were brought into the U.S.
sometime in the 1940s, so that redwood, whenever it was planted, has
done very well.

Gary,

The Dawn Redwood was discovered in fossils in 1941 and actual living
trees were first found in China in 1944. Yes, the tree has done well
and is a fast grower. It's closest relative is the Baldcypress.

Thanks on the congratulations. It is definitly going to be a change,
but a positive one. Joy has been my hiking and treehunting companion
for over a year now and she loves it! That's my kinda girl!

Calvary Episcopal Church is located between Hendersonville and
Asheville NC in the small town of Fletcher. An Ingles store is across
from it. Manual Woodworkers and Weavers is located on Howard Gap Rd
just outside of Hendersonville NC. Will just e-mailed me and told me
of some oriental spruce that resides at Calvary.
