and Will,
We are gradually filling in squares for
maximum white pine heights in different geographical regions. We
now have 138.7 feet for the western Champlain region with a
regional capacity to produce a 140-footer, if only very rarely.
Average stand maximums will be around 125 feet.
On Wednesday, Monica, Molly, and I swung
by Pack Forest and I modeled the Grandmother Tree with the
Macroscope 25. Its stats are:
CRCH = 15.8 feet (Circumference at root collar height)
CBH = 13.8 feet
Hgt = 150.5 feet
Volume = 780 cubes minimum
This is surprisingly low, but the tree
does slender down. The diameter at 21.5 feet is 3.22 feet. Some
of the largest Smoky Mountain hemlocks hold a 3-ft diameter at
over 100 feet. With limbs, the total volume of the Grandmother
Tree is probably around 830 cubes.
The is another huge pine in Pack Forest
that is about the same volume as the Grandmother Tree. Its stats
are CBH = 13.1 feet and height of 140.5 feet. I didn't do its
volume, but I think it may slightly eclipse the Grandmother
Tree.
