on this wet, foggy day, ten members of the eastern new york old growth survey team clambered over moss-cloaked talus boulders into a ridgetop ravine. for five hours they saw not a single sign of human disturbance. late in the afternoon they emerged convinced they had discovered a pristine, untouched forest of 500-year-old hemlock, birch and maple. sadly, they also realized in five more years this ancient forest will be gone, destroyed by the wooly adelgid.
