on this wet, foggy day, ten members of the eastern new york old
growth survey team clambered over moss-cloaked talus boulders
into a ridgetop ravine. for five hours they saw not a single
sign of human disturbance. late in the afternoon they emerged
convinced they had discovered a pristine, untouched forest of
500-year-old hemlock, birch and maple. sadly, they also realized
in five more years this ancient forest will be gone, destroyed
by the wooly adelgid.
