To
All,
Attempted to remeasure a balsam fir near Leonard Lake but the
deer
hunters, seemingly, had
the tree surrounded. I'll get that one later.
Went to Elders Grove at Paul Smiths and took several
measurements before
deer hunters
again had me uneasy. Here are the results:
White Pine #103 160.0 ft.13.2cbh
Balsam Fir 95.6 ft 4.0 cbh
Yellow Birch 74.5 ft 9.5 cbh
Black Cherry 87.3 ft 10.0 cbh

Holy fir! Is that an ENTS height record? Do you think the other
one is
taller?

Don't know about the record. The other one was
measured in 2003 at 89
ft 4.1 cbh.

Howard,
Nice balsam fir!!! I believe that's the tallest known in the NE!
I was on White Pine Rd near Sugarbush back on 10/15/05.
Regretably, I couldn't
find the Elder's Grove with the limited time I had. Where is the
Elders Grove
from White Pine Rd?
Here's my list of measurements to possibly add to your current
tally of the
area:
Species CBH Height
Am. larch 7.5 83.2
balsam fir 4.3 89.6
balsam fir N/A 79.8
balsam fir N/A 75.6
E. white pine 10.5 122.9
red spruce 5.5 87.2
red spruce 5.7 90
