Short Leaf Pine, Pine Barrens, NJ Barry Caselli
July 14, 2009

ENTS,
Here are several old Shortleaf Pines along the entrance road to the Batsto/Pleasant Mills Church, the church associated with the old Batsto Ironworks. The oldest marked graves in the cemetery are from 1760 and the church is from 1808. The trees may be quite old.

When Shortleaf Pines get this big and this old, I find it difficult to tell them apart from Pitch Pines, which are the dominant pines of the Pine Barrens. But these trees are Shortleaf. I've been told that the tiny cones are the giveaway.
Anyway, enjoy these 5 photos. The order in which you would see the trees if you were there, would be, from left to right:

I just can't get over the beauty of the pines in our Pine Barrens. I never tire of them.
Hope you enjoy them too.
Barry
