Death of a Hemlock, NH Chris Girard
May 21, 2009

I have a tree job on Saturday to remove what was once a beautiful
Eastern hemlock. This tree stands around 85’ tall with a 22” DBH.

The sad thing is, this tree was not killed by the dreaded HWA (it
hasn’t reached Grafton County in NH…….yet), but by human ignorance.

The property owner is a lawyer who had a landscaping crew come in and
build a retaining wall around an above ground pool without consulting
with a certified arborist first. They filled around the roots and
killed what was a beautiful tree.

Now it’s my job to have to climb this dead tree (all the bark is
coming off with no green needles showing) and remove it. This is
definitely a hazard tree and needs to come down.

I’m trying to spread the word about HWA and its inevitable spread up
here in the Lakes Region of NH, but people have no ides what is headed
this way. They really need to protect their trees better.
