ENTS:
Speaking of cottonwood records, Paul Jost and I measured some
trees up to
23.1' cbh in the Minnesota River Valley this weekend.
Details and pictures to follow when Paul gets home later this
week.

Holy Smokes! You've been describing the stout cottonwoods of the
upper
Mid-west, but 23 feet goes beyond what I was imagining. Can't
wait for
the pictures! Cottonwoods kick fanny!
Hey, can we start a significant tree gallery of the upper
Mid-west on
the ENTS website? I'm bustin at the seams to see side by side
images of
the great white pines, red pines, cottonwoods, bur oaks, black
ashes,
basswoods, etc.?

Paul has electronic pictures of most of the big trees in the
Upper
Midwest. When he gets home, we'll see if he wants to make such a
picture
gallery.
I never expected a 23 footer in MN, but this particular tree is
semi-forest
grown at the edge of the woods and has some low branches, which
helps it
attain such huge girth. Another nearby completely forest grown
tree of
about 20' cbh was even more impressive in my view, with its huge
column and
greater height. Its a younger tree with fast growth and no doubt
will also
attain 23 feet in a few years.

I'll resize the pictures and provide links to them in the next
couple of
days...
