ENTS,
back in early July of last year I went with Ellen on a wonderful
week and a half kayaking trip to Isle Royale NP in Michigan. We had
perfect weather which is very unusual for us. I had been to the
park on three previous occasions but it was Ellen's first visit. I
think I can safely say it won't be our last. I didn't expect to see
any tall trees but I brought along a tape just in case I saw
something fat. We noticed two fat trees. The first was a quaking
aspen that was a couple miles or so west of where the Lake Superior
to Siskiwit Lake portage trail meets Siskiwit Lake. I didn't even
have my tape with me at the time so the picture is all I have.

The second tree was a white spruce and it was located on the
portage trail from Wood Lake to Lake Whittlesey. This trail is only
0.6 mile in length and the tree was just to the west of a nice
northern white cedar swamp and on the north side of the trail. This
tree measured 101" in girth. I thought it
was a nice tree but I was still surprised that it was fatter than
any white spruce than Jess had in his ENTS database. I then checked
out the Michigan Champion trees and it was just a little slimmer
than the third place tree. I'm sure there are plenty of fatter
white spruces out there but it was still a nice find.
