Today I went to MTSF to visit and
mediate at my dear wife's memorial and to think about the
passing of Colby and what he meant to us. I also measured trees.
I remeasured the John Knuerr oak on Todd
Mountain. Taking a page from Will's journal, I climbed high on
the ridge to get a complete view of the tree's broad crown. The
result was most satisfying, well worth the scramble. I then
remeasured the Frank Decontie tree and found a new top that I
had hit on occasion, but didn't know what I was hitting. That
effort also paid off. The results follow:
Species Name Height Girth Comments
N. red oak John
Knuerr oak 133.4 9.4 New
red oak height rec for NE
White pine Frank
Decontie 159.6 10.1 Tallest
in Algonquin grove
White pine Thanksgiving
surprise 151.5 6.9 #
71
The Rucker index for MTSF
goes to 135.15. How sweet it was.
