Dale, Will, Jess, et al.,
MTSF won't catch up to Cook Forest any time
soon, if ever, in the
number of 150-footers, but it is always satisfying when another
Mohawk
tree makes it into the magical range. Yesterday, #78 was
confirmed, and
guess where? It is immediately next to the trees of peace
plaque. All of
us missed that one. I think I measured the tree a year ago and
it was
close to 149.
The total catch for the day (all white pines)
is as follows:
Tree Height Circumference
1 141.8 9.4
2 147.6 7.4
3 145.8 6.2
4 141.9 8.8
5 143.5 9.2
6 134.4 7.8
7 142.0 8.7
8 138.8 7.6
9 141.5 9.1
10 150.7 7.4
< = #78
11 143.9 6.1
12 134.1 7.6
13 140.4 7.8
The number of 140s in Mohawk is very, very
high and they are well
scattered throughout, most in fairly protected places. In
addition, I
understand that John Eichholz was in Trout Brook on Saturday. He
has a
big white pine up there that he was going to check out along
with the
ash. I think he said that the white pine is over 147 feet and
about 11.5
feet in circumference.
With the lone white ash tree that John
Eichholz tracks in the Trout
Brook cove that exceeds 150 feet, the number of Mohawk 150s now
stands
at 79. There is a very good chance that one of the high 140s
will make
it into the club by the end of this growing season. Probably two
or
three. Even if just one, eighty is a nice number. I like eighty.
It has
a hefty feel to it.
