ENTS:
Today Lisa Bozzuto, Susan Benoit, John
Eichholz, and I spent time in the Cherokee-Choctaw white pine
grove of MTSF. The grove covers about 15 acres although only
about 8 acres has a heavy concentration of white pines. The
estimated number of canopy pines in the grove is 500. There are
probably a few more. Because the remaining 7 acres does have a
scattering of pines.
We spent a lot of time shooting a half dozen
trees. It looks like the Charles Yow tree makes it into the 150
Club (150.6' x 8.8'). That's 3 for the Cherokee-Choctaw Pines
and 61 for MTSF. A couple of other pines in the general area of
the Jani Pine top 147 feet.
The area in MTSF that includes light to heavy
concentrations of pines cover 220 acres. About 100 of the acres
have moderate to heavy concentrations of 50 or more pines per
acre. Assuming the remainder averages 5 pines per acre, we get
5,550 pines. This is the first estimate of the number of canopy
pines in MTSF. My gut feel is that this number is light. I
expect that we'll confirm over 6,000.
