ENTS,
The slow update process for MTSF trees was taken a step farther
today. Monica and I escorted a couple of friends around parts of
MTSF. I used the opportunity to grab a few more measurements.
Two more Mohawk pines have broken the 11-foot circumference
threshold: the Bear Tree and the Jani Tree. There are now at least
17 single-stem white pines that reach 11 feet or more in girth.
Eleven feet in girth is equivalent to 42 inches in diameter.
In the young Frog Pond Stand, the Sweetie Pie Pine has made it to
140.7 feet, the first pine in the stand to reach the 140-foot
threshold. Sweetie Pie is only 7 feet in circumference, but growing
rapidly.
The following table lists the total number of pines in the indicated
height classes as of the latest measurements. The totals are
inclusive of all the trees above the listed height.
Height Class # White Pines
>=160 ft 7
>=150 ft 85
>=140 ft 249
The following table lists the total number of pines in the indicated
girth classes
Girth Class # White Pines
>= 12 ft 3
>= 11 ft 17
>= 10 ft 65
Doubles are not included in the above numbers.
Tomorrow I'll be with a film maker who is doing a documentary on the
Deerfield River and its associated forests. Little does he realize
the treasures that the river corridor holds. It should be fun. I'll
report on the filming tomorrow evening.
So far Monica has two trees named for her in MTSF: the Monica Pine
and the Sweetie Pie Pine. The Monica Pine is a handsome old growth
specimen and the Sweetie Pie is a young pine. She's well earned her
trees, having had to here me reel off numbers for hours at a time.
