ENTS,
Plodding through a new covering of 4 to 6 inches of heavy, wet snow
in MTSF, Monica, our friend Mark, and I visited the Twin Sentinels,
Jake and Joe. You're not going to believe it, but we were forced to
remeasure Jake. He demanded it. Imagine that.
Mark is a combination mathematician, linguist, and musician. In the
math department, he works on fairly high level theoretical problems,
so I didn't have any problem explaining our tree measuring
techniques. We combined efforts and remeasured Jake using my two
TruPulse hypsometers. The absolute best we could do was 168.0 feet.
So, I must accept that as Jake's height. I think Jake is sensing
Lee's regression limit of 172 feet and is reluctant to push too fast
since he is in his middle-aged years and should have another 5 to 10
feet left of height growth.
Today, my son Rob and I will meet Ray and others at Robinson SP. We
hope to lay plans for summer programming, plus visit a few tree
friends. I want to include some of the Robinson trees in the study
Lee is heading to compare the results of the sine versus tangent
methods of tree measuring.
