ENTS,
On Friday, Monica and I headed to MTSF to visit one of my favorite
sections of that superlative forest. It is the section on Clark
Ridge where the Joseph Brant pine is located. I had not measured the
tree in a couple of seasons and something told me I needed to
revisit the big tree. Well, it was worth the trip. The Brant Pine
now has measurements of:
Height: 160.2 ft
Girth: 11.1 ft
Yes, the Joseph Brant tree enters that ultra-exclusive club of New
England trees that reach the height threshhold of 160 feet. There
are 3 sites in New England with trees in that height class. They
are: Mohawk Trail State Forest (8 trees) and Monroe State Forest (1
tree) in Massachusetts and a private site in Claremont, New
Hampshire (6).
The following table lists the trees in MTSF that reach the
threshhold. The first 4 trees have been climbed and tape drop
measured.

To keep the above information into perspective, the only other
confirmed 160-footers in the Northeast include the following sites.

Cook Forest, PA 31

Hearts Content 3
Anders Run 1

There may be a few other great whites lurking around in the
Northeast that reach the threshhold, but it remains for ENTS to find
them. We once thought we had a pine in the Adirondacks that broke
160, but Howard Stoner could not confirm it on his last visit to the
Elders Grove. We've also been sent out on wild goose chases. The
club is very, very select and MTSF is at the top of the list in New
England although the Claremont site needs to be revisited. One claim
that can be made with confidence is that among the public
properties, MTSF is #1 in New England.
